IF FILLER COMPOUND, SPRAY, AND/OR HARDENER IS INGESTED, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. CALL PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY. FILLER CONTAINS STYRENE. HARDENER CONTAINS BENZOYL PEROXIDE. SPRAY CONTAINS ACETONE, BUTYL ACETATE, BUTANOL, XYLENE AND PROPANE/BUTANE.

ENAMEL SPRAY FLAMMABLE. DO NOT USE NEAR FIRE OR FLAME. SO NOT SMOKE WHILE USING PRODUCT.

DO NOT EXPOSE AEROSOL CONTAINER TO TEMPERATURES ABOVE 120*F. DO NOT PUNCTURE OR INCINERATE. DISPOSE OF ALL COMPONENTS PROPERLY.

WHAT TO EXPECT

When used according to directions, this kit provides a durable, nearly invisible repair. However, there are a couple of limitations.

COLOR MATCH & COLORS:
The glaze on vitreous china and the porcelain-enamel on cast iron and steel vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer and even from run to run. They also react differently than the enamel spray to different types of light – the spray may match better under some room lighting conditions than in others. SURFACE REPAIR enamel spray provides an acceptable match to all major U.S. fixture manufacturer’s colors as named. However, we cannot guarantee an EXACT match to every fixture under all lighting conditions. A good repair will certainly look a whole lot better than the ugly chip you started with. Plumbing White (with hint of gray) is for “white” plumbing fixtures. Appliance White (bright white) is for “white” appliances. Bone/Almond (light tan) is for plumbing fixtures and/or appliances…color is the same.

SURFACE GLOSS:
When first applied, the gloss on the SURFACE REPAIR spray will approximate that on NEW porcelain-enamel or ceramic glaze. It may be shinier than an old, dull fixture, particularly one that has been scrubbed with abrasive cleansers. The spray will “wear in” with time and will tend to take on the texture of the surrounding material. For older fixtures, use SURFACE REPAIR’s High Gloss Clear Overcoat Spray, to restore to like new appearance..DO NOT CLEAN THE REPAIR WITH ABRASIVE CLEANSERS.

DURABILITY:
The spray dries hard, but not as hard as porcelain-enamel, which is basically glass. Particularly in kitchen sinks, where there is a lot of abuse to the surface, the spray may eventually wear off and have to be reapplied. In bathtubs and lavatories, the patch should last indefinitely. AGAIN – NO ABRASIVE CLEANSERS.

RANGES AND COOK TOPS:
The finished repair is safe to approximately 350*F. This will be suitable for most areas of ranges and cook tops, but not right next to burners or just above the oven and broiler doors. If in doubt concerning the operating temperature of a specific area of your range or cook top, consult the manufacturer before attempting a repair.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

There are times in life when patience is rewarded – this is one of those times.

The quality and durability of the finished repair depends entirely on how well the materials are applied, finished, and cured. A properly applied repair will be virtually invisible and will last for years. It is possible to back up and repeat almost every step in this process. So, if you are not satisfied the first time, try again.

STEP 1 – SURFACE PREPARATION

A. Filler paste and enamel spray should be applied and cured at 60*F or above.

B. Surface must be clean, dry and free from rust. Remove soap scum, grease, wax, etc with SURFACE REPAIR’s PreCleaner
Spray or denatured alcohol. Do not use paint thinner (mineral spirits).

C. If base cast-iron or seal is rusted, remove rust with wire brush or commercial rust removal preparation. Clean surface
thoroughly with SURFACE REPAIR’s PreCleaner Spray or denatured alcohol.

D. Ensure that there is no loose porcelain-enamel or ceramic glaze around the edges of the damaged area. In order
to ensure good adherence of the patch where bare steel is showing, rough up the area to be repaired with the course
sandpaper before applying the patch.

STEP 2 – APPLICATION OF FILLER/HARDENER COMPOUND

A. Place a small amount of the filler paste (2” bead) in a container. Mix in a SMALL AMOUNT of the hardener (3/4” bead) in a ratio of 20:1. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCELERATE HARDENING BY ADDING TOO MUCH HARDENER. The patch will shrink and will not adhere properly.

B. Using the wood spatula provided, apply the filler/hardener
compound to the damaged area. Use enough to completely fill
in the chip so that it can be “feathered in” when sanding in

STEP 3.

C. Occupy yourself with something else for about an hour (more than an hour if the room is cold). If you stand around and wait for it to dry you will probably get impatient and start sanding
before the patch is hard.

STEP 3 – SANDING

A. This could really be part of STEP 2, but we wanted to emphasize the importance of waiting for the patch to harden.

B. Starting with the coarser of the two pieces of sandpaper provided, shape the patch to overall contours of the
surrounding area. USE LIGHT PRESSURE SO YOU DON’T SCRATCH THE ENAMEL AROUND THE PATCH.

C. Finish the job with the fine sandpaper. Make sure that the patch is perfectly smooth and feathered in. The finished
repair will only be as good as the final sanding job.

D. If there are any voids or low spots in the patch, clean off all of The sanding dust, mix up a little more filler compound and fill them in. Give the new material an hour (or more if the room is cold) to harden completely. Then re-sand per the above
directions.

STEP 4 – ENAMEL SPRAY

A. Carefully clean up all of the sanding dust. Wipe the area with SURFACE REPAIR’s PreCleaner Spray or denatured alcohol.

B. Mask off adjacent tile, fittings, counter-top, etc.

C. MAKE SURE THAT THE ARROW ON THE SPRAY TIP IS POINTING AWAY FROM YOU. Hold the can about 5-6 inches from the surface, and apply the spray with short stroking motion over the patch. Build up the spray coating SLOWLY, allowing spray to dry briefly between coats.

D. If you get a run or sag, DON’T PANIC. Wipe the spray off with with a clean cloth wetted with SURFACE REPAIR’s PreCleaner Spray. Allow surface to dry. Sand again, if necessary, and clean away all dust with SURFACE REPAIR’s Pre Cleaner Spray.

E. To avoid splatters, clean off the nozzle of the spray tip with a clean cloth, between passes. If the nozzle starts to clog, hold the can upside-down and blow a little propellant through to clean it out. The propellant is, by the way, environmentally friendly.

F. When spraying is complete, some over spray may be evident. Not to worry; it will substantially disappear after a few weeks of normal use and cleaning OR – AFTER THE REPAIR HAS CURED FOR 48 HOURS you can polish the over spray off with our Plexus Polishing and Cleaning Spray.

G. That’s right – DO NOT USE THE FIXTURE OR ALLOW THE SPRAYED AREA TO GET WET FOR 48 HOURS. Use the kids’ bathroom. Use the other bowl of the sink. You get the idea. The spray becomes fairly hard in about half an hour, but don’t be fooled. This is the patience part again. If the spray flakes off, it’s either because the surface wasn’t clean or because it wasn’t allowed to cure properly.

CARE AND CLEANING

DO NOT USE ABRASIVE CLEANSERS OR SOLVENTS. DO NOT GET DRAIN CLEANER ON THE REPAIRED AREA. Use SURFACE REPAIR’s Plexus or similar product for cleaning and maintaining the fixture. The kit contains enough material to make 4-5 average (3/8” x 3/8” 1-1/2” chip) repairs. Be sure to carefully clean the spray tip of the SURFACE REPAIR Refinishing Spray and tighten the caps on the filler and hardener components before you put them away. The SURFACE REPAIR Refinishing Spray and the filler and hardener components have shelf lives of one year. Store your SURFACE REPAIR Porcelain-Enamel Repair Kit in a safe place, out of the reach of children.
